Raleigh, NC - On Sunday November 21, Jackie Tyner, a Cary nurse, will welcome dinner guests to a five course wine-tasting fundraising dinner in the dining room at Catering by Design in downtown Cary, North Carolina.
The purpose of the dinner is to raise $3500 to help young boys at a state orphanage, CISNA, in the capital of El Salvador. Over 85% of them show learning disabilities, and the state no longer funds the special education teachers that used to help tutor the boys.
"On my last visit there, I spoke with the director and asked how we could best help them, and he said the strongest need was for tutors," said Tyner. "The teachers there acknowledged they don't have the training to help the boys with their disabilities."
Tyner will tell the guests about her visits to the orphanage on three mission trips with Hope Chapel Apex, and that she felt a tug in her heart that she couldn't ignore. She will thank them for joining her at this special dinner for funding a special education teacher to visit weekly to help the children learn.
"Gangs are so prevalent there, that when the boys age out of the orphanage, the gangs swoop them up," Tyner explained. "If we can help them learn better, build some math, reading and writing skills, they'll have a better chance in life."
It's hot in El Salvador and the orphanage has a pool for the boys, but it was in disrepair and the water was not treated. Another missionary repaired the pool mortar, but they still needed funds to buy the water treatment chemicals. The $3500 also includes a one year supply of chemicals to keep the pool water clean for these growing boys.
The wine-tasting dinner is open to the public by advance reservation at 919-481-2366. Dinner is $75 per person.
Donations are also welcome. Checks can be made payable to Hope Chapel with this note on the check, "For El Salvador, CISNA, Boy's Orphanage." For those not coming to the dinner, the checks can be mailed to Hope Chapel, 6175 old Jenks Road, Apex, NC 27523. The donations are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law.
"We all fund our own trips to El Salvador, and there is no overhead, so we can guarantee that every dollar donated will go directly to help the boys," Tyner said.
Tyner's husband Dr. Michael Tyner is a surgeon who also travels on these mission trips to El Salvador. His work is with the local hospital, Hospital de Niños Benjamin Bloom, Benjamin Bloom pediatric hospital, where he is helping them do laparoscopic surgery. Already he's inspired several North Carolina hospitals and two corporations to donate instruments.
Dr. and Mrs. Tyner work together in a private surgical office with two practices:
Cary Surgical Specialists - http://www.carysurgical.com/
Bariatric Specialists of North Carolina - http://www.surgerync.com/
The Tyners participated in the holiday fundraiser held at Catering by Design last year, in December 2009, and traveled on the same mission trip with Catering by Design owner, Greg Lewis and his daughter.
