Highwoods Properties Donates $10,000 to Homes for Our Troops

Raleigh, N.C. -- Highwoods Properties, Inc., the largest owner and operator of suburban office properties in the Southeast and 2009 NAIOP Developer of the Year, today announced that it has made a second annual $10,000 donation to Homes for Our Troops in lieu of employee and director holiday gifts. Homes for Our Troops is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that assists severely injured service personnel and their immediate families. The organization raises donations inclusive of money, building materials and professional labor, and coordinates the process of building a new home or adapting an existing home for handicapped accessibility.
Highwoods’ donation will go towards the construction of a home in the Clarksville area of Tennessee for Staff Sergeant (SSG) Heath Calhoun, a member of the 101st Airborne Division. On November 7, 2003, while serving in Iraq, he was severely injured when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his Humvee. The injuries to SSG Calhoun resulting from the explosion led to the amputation of both of his legs.
“Highwoods traditionally has given gifts to every employee and director during the holiday season. In lieu of gifts over the last two years, we wanted to support an organization, such as Homes for Our Troops, that honors individuals who have made tremendous sacrifices for our Country,” said Ed Fritsch, President and CEO of Highwoods Properties. “This tradition has had an overwhelmingly positive response from our team, and we are proud to once again help a soldier and his family to live in a more accessible home,” added Fritsch.
Last year, Highwoods donated $10,000 towards a new home for Sergeant (SGT) Darryl Wallace. On August 7, 2009, during a special ribbon-cutting ceremony, SGT Wallace's wife, Tiffany, and the couple's five-year-old son, Chase, accepted the keys and the debt-free deed to their new home in Harlem, Georgia.
