RALEIGH – As part of his continuing health series, John C. Pittman, MD, of The Carolina Center for Integrative Medicine (CCIM), will present “Heavy Metals and Your Heart: The Life-Saving Potential of Heavy Metal Removal” on Tuesday, January 12th from 7:00-8:00pm at CCIM’s office at 4505 Fair Meadow Lane, Suite 111 in Raleigh. This free, public health presentation will discuss the use of heavy metal detoxification therapy in treating heart disease and hypertension, as well as the government-sponsored clinical trials currently underway to demonstrate its benefits.

“High levels of mercury and lead have been linked with heart failure and hypertension, respectively,” explains Dr. Pittman. “Many people are taking conventional drugs to treat these conditions without realizing that their heavy metal burden may be driving the process. Chelating drugs that bind to heavy metals have been shown to not only remove calcium plaque from artery walls, but also reverse atherosclerosis and effectively treat heart disease for many individuals.”

Dr. Pittman and The Carolina Center use heavy metal detoxification therapy to treat patients diagnosed with mercury toxicity, administering the chelating drugs EDTA and DMPS according to nationally standardized protocols. These chelating drugs have been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of toxicity conditions from various heavy metals and anecdotal as well, as clinical studies have also shown EDTA to reduce arterial plaque associated with vascular disease. According to Dr. Pittman, patients who receive heavy metal detoxification therapy are reported to have experienced increased energy levels, improved sleep, reduction in food cravings, improved ability to cope with stress, and a feeling of youthfulness and vitality.

Although chelation has been an effective method of treating lead and other heavy metal toxicity, researchers began to take note of its other effects. “EDTA has been shown to remove radioactive substances in acute radiation poisoning, lower blood cholesterol levels, and has had beneficial effects in the treatment of arthritis and other autoimmune disorders,” notes Dr. Pittman, adding, “It is this effect that often leads heart patients to seek this kind of therapy over conventional pharmaceutical and surgical treatments.”
